Introduction Casualties is a raw, human scent. Simultaneously familiar and unfamiliar. Visceral and unsettling. Foreign in the sense that we typically mask our natural human scent. We shy away from our humanity.
Notes Natural, musky human scent. Familiar. Fish sauce. Fresh off the Boat. Welcome to the International Fish Market. Obviously foreign. Smelling my lunch! I know you're an animal. Dirty and poor, like an Old Raddish. Smells like murder.
ABOUT Casualties was inspired by Anicka Yi's Immigrant Caucus (2017) which mixes chemical compounds from Asian American women and carpenter ants. In her exhibition Life is Cheap, cans would spray this mixture into the air near visitors, evoking fears of the foreign or unknown.
The Oriental Sauce Factory is a 2021 exhibition by Haena Yoo which critiques capitalist production and structures often through scent. Yoo's L'Oriental (2021) are reimagined bottled consumer products, filled with a sauce mixed with herbs and other projects desired by Asians.
